Barry Ferguson Claims Nephew Lewis Is Good Enough To Play For Celtic And He Would Have No Issue With Him Doing So | OneFootball

Former Rangers player Barry Ferguson insists family history will have no impact on nephew Lewis joining Celtic if the Hoops make a move for him.

The Aberdeen man has been rumoured with a Celtic move on social media, though nothing from a credible source has been noted. Many felt such a move would be impossible given Ferguson’s family connections with Rangers in terms of his uncle and father playing for the old club. However, Barry said that it wouldn’t be an issue if the opportunity arose.

He told GoRadio: “Lewis is his own guy, he’d make his own decision. I don’t think it would be a factor in Lewis making that decision that his dad and his uncle played for Rangers.

“He’s got a good head on his shoulders and I don’t think that would worry him. Whether Celtic are interested in him, I don’t know, I know there’s been a lot of talk about Celtic and Rangers.

“If I’m being honest, I do think he’s good enough to play for both of those teams. Each year he’s improved and this season he’s had a real good start.

“I wouldn’t hold anything against him, I just want the best for him and for him to have a good career in the game. He’s done it the hard way, he let go by Rangers as a kid. He had that knock, went to Hamilton and worked his way up and got the move to Aberdeen.

“He’s flourished under Derek McInnes and I think if he keeps his form up that he’s shown, I think Aberdeen will find it hard to hold onto him.”

Ferguson has been named alongside Turnbull as one of the best prospects in Scotland outside of the Glasgow clubs, before Celtic signed the latter from Motherwell.

The 21-year-old has another four years left on his contract at Aberdeen and thus would court a hefty fee.

Surprisingly, Barry would fully back him if an opportunity to join the champions came up and he reckons Lewis could become the best player in Scotland.

Barry added: “He’s focused on doing his best that he can do and getting the best out of his career. I’ve been asked this question quite a number of times from people, ‘Would you hold something against him?’.

“At the end of the day, he’s my nephew and I want the best for him and I want him to try and be the best player in Scotland and he’s got a chance. He’s certainly improving each season and you’ve got to give a lot of credit to Hamilton.

“A lot of people say Derek’s done a great job, he has but Hamilton deserve a lot of credit for taking him on and working with him as a young man. When you get that disappointment it’s easy to get lost in the game and fall out of it but Lewis had that bit between his teeth to go and prove that he’s good enough to make it as a professional footballer and he’s certainly done that and listen, if a move came and it was Celtic then fair play to him but I wouldn’t be asking him for a ticket.

“I just want him to be the best he can be and I’m sure if he keeps working hard then he’ll get a move at some stage.”
