The 30-year-old is the latest player to leave the Owls during what has been a difficult transfer window for the club, with the likes of Djeidi Gassama, Michael Smith and Josh Windass all having exited, while no reinforcements have been brought in.

It looks as though manager Danny Rohl could be the next man to leave Hillsborough, with it being understood that a settlement which would see him leave his role is close to being agreed.

Sheffield Wednesday are unable to pay any transfer fees until January 2027, their players have not been paid multiple times this year, and owner Dejphon Chansiri remains adamant that he will only sell the club for £100 million, so things are not looking promising in South Yorkshire.

Therefore, it is understandable that Paterson has taken the opportunity to sign for MK Dons, even though it seems to have been a difficult decision for the Scot.

Callum Paterson took to Instagram to share a message with Sheffield Wednesday supporters after it was confirmed that he had signed for League Two side MK Dons.

"Sadly my time at @swfcofficial has come to an end," Paterson wrote.

"I've loved every second of playing for this massive club and made so many memories that I'll never forget, especially in the promotion season.

"186 times I was privileged enough to wear the badge and it was always an honour to pull on that shirt whenever I got the opportunity.

"I would just like to thank all of the fans for making me feel at home in Sheffield for the last 5 seasons. Thank you to all of the back room staff, the physios, the coaching staff and everyone else in between. You have all been amazing with me and I'll forever appreciate it.

"I've made some amazing friends for life at the club and in the city itself. Sheffield will always hold a special part in my life with my daughter being born here.

"I wish everyone at @swfcofficial all the best for the upcoming season and for the future beyond that. Excited to start a new chapter.

"WAWAW"

Sheffield Wednesday supporters will always remember Paterson for the part he played in the Owls' memorable comeback against Peterborough United during the League One play-off semi-final in 2023, as well as the commitment and desire he showed throughout his time in South Yorkshire.

Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has been at Hillsborough for the duration of Paterson's time at the club, and it seems as though the 35-year-old enjoyed sharing a dressing room with his compatriot.

He left a message for Paterson in the replies underneath the forward's message to the club's supporters on Instagram.

"All the best mate been a pleasure," Bannan wrote.

The Owls' supporters will hope that Bannan can stay and bring at least some continuity into next season, as the club will need him around if they are going to have any chance of competing in the Championship during the 2025/26 campaign, especially after what has gone on this summer.
