Álvaro Barreal will not stay with Cruzeiro. The Brazilian club did not exercise the purchase option, and the Argentine forward returns to FC Cincinnati, owner of his rights. Signed on loan at the beginning of 2024, Barreal lived moments of ups and downs with Cabuloso. The physical problems have been an obstacle to his stay.
The passage of Álvaro Barreal at Cruzeiro was marked by contrasts. Early in the season, the Argentine arrived with a lot of expectation, first as a left wingback and afterward as a midfielder. Then, during that period, he was showing his quality and skill, contributing in important matches to support the midfield. However, the physical pain began to take part in his performance. During the second part of the season, an inguinal hernia problem and ankle pains persisted in not allowing him to do great things. This then made the Argentine miss several decisive matches and lose a fixed place. In total, Barreal played 42 matches, with 2 goals scored and 4 assists given. At his best, these few stats brought equilibrium in midfield to the team and gave more freedom for other key players to express themselves.
Barreal's loan deal included a purchase option valued at $4 million, but Cruzeiro eventually decided against activating it. The decision was greatly influenced by the apprehension of his physical condition.
Meanwhile, FC Cincinnati, owner of Barreal's rights, has already made its stance clear. The MLS club recently announced the extension of the forward's contract until December 2026, one year beyond its original expiration date in 2025. This shows that Cincinnati believes in the recovery and contribution of Barreal either as a key player or a valuable asset for future transfers.
Despite the difficulties, Barreal thanked Cruzeiro. After the match against Bragantino, the Argentine published a photo of himself with the light blue jersey on social networks. The caption was straightforward: "It was an honor, thank you."
This message felt like a respectful farewell, showing his appreciation for the club despite the challenges he faced. Cruzeiro fans recognized his dedication, even amidst injuries, and many lamented the club’s decision not to retain him for the 2025 season.
This is good news for FC Cincinnati, as Barreal finally returns. The Argentine, previously a standout in MLS, now has the chance to recover and show the form that once made him valuable. When fit, Barreal is a versatile forward who brings some much-needed creativity and energy into the team's offensive setup.
Moreover, FC Cincinnati may view Barreal as an asset for future transfers. MLS has become an important source of player exports, and with his contract extended to 2026, the interest of European or South American clubs could raise his market value.
