Barnsley are interested in signing 19-year-old midfielder Kian Corbally from League of Ireland side St Patrick’s Athletic, a report from The Irish Mirror has claimed.

Corbally has previously made a single first-team appearance for the club, before spending last season out on loan in the Irish second-tier with Longford Town.

Having featured a further 13 times at senior level during that spell, it seems interest is growing in the teenager from the Football League.

According to this latest update, the midfielder is set to travel to Wales on Sunday, in order to train with League Two side Newport County with a view to a potential move to Rodney Parade.

However, it is thought that Barnsley, along with Newport’s fourth-tier rivals Colchester United, are both keen to hijack the deal, following Corbally’s impressive progress in Ireland.

Which club did Barnsley sign these 22 players from?

For their part, Barnsley currently sit sixth in the League One table, 12 points adrift of the automatic promotion places.

The Verdict

This could leave Corbally with a rather big decision to make with regards to his future.

Given their status in League One, Barnsley could be the more appealing move, in terms of the level they can give him the chance to play at, and the financial rewards they could provide him with.

In contrast to that, a move to League Two with either Colchester or Newport is something that could offer the midfielder the chance to play more regular first-team football in the near future.

That too is something that ought to be worth considering for Corbally, given the boost that could give his career, meaning it could be a tough call for the midfielder to make here.
