Barnsley striker Devante Cole has admitted that he is hoping to help his side challenge for promotion by finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

Cole was limited to just eight starts in the Championship last season due to the presence of Carlton Morris and Cauley Woodrow.

Following the club’s relegation to League One, Morris and Woodrow both sealed moves to Luton Town.

While Barnsley boss Michael Duff did bolster his attacking options by signing Slobodan Tedic and James Norwood earlier this year, Cole has managed to establish himself as a key member of the club’s starting eleven.

The forward made his 19th league appearance of the season last weekend in Barnsley’s meeting with Peterborough United.

Goals from Luca Connell and Adam Phillips allowed the Reds to secure all three points at the Weston Homes Stadium.

Barnsley will be aiming to extend their current winning run in the third-tier to five games this weekend when they face Oxford United.

Ahead of this fixture, Cole has set himself a personal target.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, the forward said: “It is a massive turnaround from last year.

“Being on the pitch, I feel like I am enjoying my football and expressing myself and showing people what I can do.

“I have bought into what he wants and enjoy playing football (under Duff) and want to get out there and score goals and hopefully get back up the leagues.

“To do that with Barnsley is the aim.”

The Verdict

Whereas Barnsley are currently nine points adrift of the promotion places, they do have a game in hand over Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle and thus there is a possibility that they could launch a push for a top-two finish.

In order to challenge these aforementioned clubs, Barnsley will need Cole to be firing on all cylinders in their upcoming fixtures.

By maintaining his fitness, Cole could potentially help Barnsley remain in the hunt for a place in the Championship by regularly adding to this aforementioned tally.
