Barnsley are interested in signing Josh Koroma, but face competition from a list of other clubs for the Huddersfield Town man.
The 26-year-old officially leaves the Terriers at the end of the month, with his contract expiring after originally joining in 2019.
And now, the higher-ups at Oakwell are reportedly keen to secure his signature on a free transfer.
Koroma joined Huddersfield from Leyton Orient, and has gone on to play 168 times. The vast majority of his games have come in the Sky Bet Championship, with loan spells at Rotherham United and Portsmouth also on his CV. He scored 11 times in League One last season.
He may head back to South Yorkshire, with BBC Radio Sheffield journalist Adam Oxley posting on his X account that Barnsley are “interested in signing” the winger.
However, he noted that Conor Hourihane’s team face competition from “several other clubs” in something of a hurdle for the Tykes.
Barnsley struggled to a mid-table finish last season, with Hourihane replacing a dismissed Darrell Clarke part-way through the term. The Tykes finished 12th come the end of the campaign, three points behind 10th-placed Huddersfield Town.
Both Yorkshire clubs did not enjoy the 2024/25 campaign, with them originally hoping to finish in the play-off places.
Huddersfield did not achieve what they had wanted to in the most recent season, dropping into the third tier after a sorry relegation and failing to bounce back on the first time of asking.
Instead of challenging for promotion with the likes of Lincoln City favourite Lasse Sorensen adding to their strong squad, Town dropped below the play-off places just before Michael Duff was sacked.
Jon Worthington replaced him, but fared even worse with Huddersfield slipping away from the top six entirely.
Despite struggles for the team as a whole, Koroma had his most productive season in Terriers colours. He netted 11 times alongside two assists, which amounted to his best goalscoring season since his final term with Leyton Orient in the National League.
Koroma will now move on, with the versatile and attractive winger the target of many clubs' attentions after being included in a long list of released players. He showed his worth in spits and bursts during the League One season, with Barnsley one of the sides lining up a swoop for the free agent this summer.
The 2025/26 season will be Hourihane’s first full term in charge at Oakwell, and there is plenty of business to do before the first ball is kicked thanks to a number of exits already this summer. Koroma could kick that off if Barnsley manage to turn the signing from simply an interest to a concrete deal.
