Cotter, who progressed through the ranks at Limerick before a move to Ipswich Town came to fruition in January 2018, was unable to pave his way to regular football at Portman Road.

Arriving back in Ireland to join Shamrock Rovers in the summer of 2021, the full-back joined St Patrick’s Athletic at the start of last season and has featured in the Europa Conference League.

True False

The report suggests that several clubs in the UK have been monitoring the 24-year-old’s situation, with Barnsley the likely winners in this particular race.

The verdict

Barnsley have proven to take a different kind of route in their recruitment during this window and the last, although they are continuing to recruit young players who they can develop.

Cotter, who has gained good experience in the League of Ireland over the last 18 months or so will be eager to thrive in League One this time around after a difficult spell with Ipswich.

From a Barnsley perspective, it is a low-risk move, with the Tykes spending a small five-figure sum on his transfer.
