The 29-year-old was on Sunday left with multiple broken facial bones and a concussion after colliding with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Varga competed for an aerial ball at a free-kick but was left prone on the pitch after the mid-air collision. Team-mates and medics rushed to his aid and a protective screen around the player was improvised with blankets.

Varga received treatment for nearly seven minutes, with his team-mates seen in distress after seeing the incident and captain Dominik Szoboszlai was close to tears.

It was confirmed shortly after the final whistle that the Ferencvaros forward had been transferred to hospital in Stuttgart, and that he was in a stable condition and conscious.

Hungary boss Marco Rossi, his coaching staff and full-back Endre Botka visited Varga in hospital earlier this week to show their support.

On Monday, Varga’s partner Laura Skrapits posted an update to fans on social media following the operation.

“Thank you for your kind, supportive messages,” Skrapits posted. “Barni is over the surgery. A little rest is waiting for him but he'll be fine!”

Gergely Panics, the Ferencvaros team doctor, soon after told Hungarian media that Vargas could be released as on Wednesday after “several smaller and larger bones were broken in his face, and some were even dislocated.”

On Wednesday afternoon, the Hungarian Football Federation confirmed Varga’s operation was a success and he has been able to return to Hungary.

A statement on the official Hungarian Football Federation X account read: "Barnabas Varga was released from the Stuttgart hospital this morning and is currently recovering at home in Hungary."
