FC Barcelona were dealt a major blow earlier today as Athletic Club officially announced that Nico Williams had signed a new contract with the team until 2035.
The 22-year-old winger had been the Blaugrana’s top target for the left wing and had even reached an agreement over a six-year contract.
However, lack of guarantees over registration, much like last summer, once again led to a U-turn, with the Spaniard opting to renew with the Basque club.
The sudden collapse of the Nico Williams deal has hit Barcelona hard and will force the club to change their transfer plans significantly.
With that now off the table, the focus returns to signing a top-level winger. Luis Diaz (Liverpool) and Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) are the two main alternatives for the La Liga champions, reports SPORT.
Deco has always favoured Diaz, preferring the Colombian over Nico Williams, and has defended his case internally. A move will be attempted, but it is far more difficult than it was weeks ago.

Liverpool have already turned down an offer from Bayern Munich and continue to consider Diaz untouchable. The tragic passing of Diogo Jota has significantly affected the English club, making it an unsuitable time to open any negotiations.
As a result, attention may now shift to Rashford. Hansi Flick views him as a highly useful player, and he may be the most viable option, given the forward’s strong desire to join Barça.
Rashford sent his brother to Barcelona to make it clear that he only wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt and is willing to do whatever it takes – including accepting a loan deal or even reducing his high salary to fit within the wage structure.
Manchester United remain focused on securing a permanent transfer and are asking for around €40 million.
However, manager Ruben Amorim does not want Rashford involved in pre-season. This puts pressure on the club to sanction his exit swiftly – possibly on a loan with an option to buy.
This shift in direction, depending on which player Barça ultimately target, could also affect broader squad planning. If they opt for Rashford on loan, there may be financial room to pursue one or two additional signings as well.
