Barcelona have been extravagant in the summer transfer window, signing the likes of Raphinha and Roberto Lewandowski in blockbuster deals.
They also appear not to be slowing down as they are working on further reinforcements, with Jules Kounde and Bernardo Silva identified as potential targets.
The spending spree has raised everyone’s eyebrows due to the Catalan club’s well-documented financial crisis.
Perhaps, the reason for Barca’s successful transfer business so far turns out to be the activation of two economic levers, which has boosted the club’s finances significantly.
However, above all, Barca face a big hurdle in the form of La Liga’s Financial Fair Play. The Catalan giants will not be allowed to register all their new signings unless they cope with FFP rules, which could be made possible only by selling players as much as they can.
Spanish outlet Marca claims that Barca could be able to register new signings and invest in further reinforcements with the help of a third economic lever.
Barca have put a handful of players on the chopping block, including the likes of Frenkie de Jong, Riqui Puig, Oscar Mingueza, Neto and Memphis Depay, having already sold a few – Philippe Coutinho, Rey Manaj, Clement Lenglet.
De Jong is the most prized asset of all, and Barca are doing everything in their power to sell him, with Manchester United reportedly having an agreement in place with the Catalan club.
However, the Red Devils have so far failed to convince the Dutch midfielder, who is not considering leaving the Catalan giants at the moment because of the deferred payments they owe him.
Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva has been identified as an ideal replacement should De Jong leave this summer.
Although the Premier League champions value him at around €80m, Barca believe they can afford the transfer fee with the sale of De Jong.
Jules Kounde is their priority target to reinforce the defence. However, Chelsea are increasingly confident of landing the French international, having had their recent offer accepted by Sevilla.
