Jan Virgili has become the big headline in the Barcelona camp recently following his explosive performance in the Intercontinental Cup final at the iconic Maracana stadium.

The 19-year-old winger caused all kinds of trouble the Flamengo defenders on both flanks and ended the game by scoring a stunning goal, hitting the post once, and creating several chances.

Virgili’s performance at the Maracana has reportedly forced Barcelona to think twice about offloading him, especially considering the fact that the Catalans were willing to let him go for just €4 million earlier this month.

Barcelona’s plan with Jan Virgili

A recent report from AS has given a detailed insight into Virgili’s future, suggesting that Barcelona indeed want the youngster to stay.

However, at this point, Barça are essentially powerless if Virgili himself is keen on leaving Catalonia and kick-starting his professional career.

The club, for their part, believe the ideal thing the youngster can do is to continue at the academy and play for Barça Atletic.

Although the club do understand that Virgili is too good to play in the fourth division, they appear to be open to giving the youngster opportunities in the first team.

This is, in fact, a message to not just Virgili but to all young players in the academy, who are uncertain about their future at the club.

However, first-team action is something that cannot be guaranteed, so it is now purely up to Virgili to decide his own fate.

Continuing in Catalonia will mean continued action with Barça Atletic, and a difficult road to the first team. So, in case the youth prodigy asks to leave, the best option for Barcelona will be to ensure a buyback clause.
