Barcelona plan to offer goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny a new contract this summer after being impressed with his performances this season, a report in Spain has claimed.

Szczesny retired last summer following his departure from Juventus but quickly reversed his decision, signing on with Barcelona, who needed cover for Marc-Andre ter Stegen after the Germany international went down with a serious knee injury.

After initially sitting on the bench to cover for stand-in stopper Inaki Pena, Szczesny became the starter in January and is yet to taste defeat for Barcelona, with his performance in the 1-0 win over Benfica attracting particular praise.

MARCA state Szczesny has done enough to earn himself an extension, which will be offered at the end of the season.

"I'm not worried about that right now," Szczesny said when quizzed on his future after the Benfica game. "My focus is on the matches, I want to give my best at Barcelona and then we will look at my future, at the right time."

Szczesny's new contract is expected to coincide with the departure of Pena who, with less than 18 months left on his contract, is expected to be made available for transfer instead of becoming a third-choice goalkeeper when Ter Stegen returns to action.

Barcelona have just two expiring contracts to worry about this summer. Alongside Szczesny, centre-back Inigo Martinez is approaching the end of his deal, but the veteran defender is thought to have already agreed an extension which simply needs approving by La Liga.

A new contract has also been offered to midfielder Frenkie de Jong, whose deal runs until 2026.
