Samuel Umtiti is looking to have his salary trebled after a run of stellar performances since joining from Lyon.
Despite Barcelona initiating talks to improve and extend Umtiti’s contract, there has been little to no progression. Sport-English reports that Barça’s first offer failed to impress both the France international’s representatives and the player himself.
There are serious thoughts that he could leave Camp Nou, despite being just two years into a five-year contract, as Umtiti’s release clause sits at just €60m.
It’s understandable to think how Umtiti would feel slighted, given he is a regular starter in Ernesto Valverde’s lineup and makes less than half what most his team-mates do, including those on the bench.
However, with where Barcelona’s wage bill is at right now, it’s hard to imagine that Umtiti will see his salary trebled. For now, both sides are going to reflect before they resume negotiations.
