If he had known this would happen, perhaps the club wouldn’t have been so quick to dispense with Brazilian duo Philippe Coutinho and Malcom this summer.

He will be without his key trio for a must-win league game on Sunday night against Real Betis at the Camp Nou, where the visitors won last season.

It is hardly an attack which inspires you with the greatest confidence when you know you have to pick up your first points of the season.

A testament to how low on options Valverde is, 16-year-old starlet Ansu Fati has been the big surprise name in the matchday squad.

That said, it was surprising to see Carles Aleñá omitted, given the Blaugrana’s injury issues.
