Arsenal star Jen Beattie was involved in a heartwarming Twitter exchange with Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas after the 31-year-old joked that she didn’t believe the Spaniard knew who she was.

Putellas is widely regarded as the best player on the planet and is the current captain of Barcelona. The 28-year-old was also the first female player to make 100 appearances for the Spanish national team and is their second-highest goalscorer.

Beattie, who turned professional more than 15 years ago and has played for the Gunners since 2019, described Putellas as an “unbelievable player” and revealed how she was once lucky enough to get one of her shirts.

Swapping shirts with Putellas

Speaking on Three Players and a Podcast, alongside Everton star Izzy Christiansen and former WSL star Rachel Yankey, Beattie was asked about the favourite shirt she’d ever got.

“We played against Spain in a qualifier and I got Alexia Putellas,” the Scottish international said.

She added: “I made a beeline for her and she had no idea who I was, never in a million [years].”

Beattie also joked that she’s often wondered what Putellas did with the Scottish jersey she gave her.

“I’ve often wondered what she did with my shirt,” she admitted.

What did Putellas say to Beattie?

The podcast clip was shared on the Sky Sports WSL page and it prompted the Barcelona star to respond to the clip.

“Hey @jbeattie91,” she said. “I absolutely have an idea who you are, ever since you scored in my first CL [Champions League] game and first defeat against Arsenal in 2012.”

Beattie evidently found it hilarious that the world’s best player did actually know her and responded with two laughing face emojis.

She also added: “Wow, okay you have a good memory then.”

“Love this,” said the former Lioness.

Beattie’s outstanding career

While Beattie was modest in believing Putellas was unaware of her, the Scot has enjoyed a fantastic career so far.

Capable of playing in defence and midfield, the 31-year-old has made 140 appearances for Scotland and scored more than 20 goals.

Beattie also won the WSL, FA Cup and League Cup with Man City, as well the Women’s Premier League with Arsenal back in 2009.
