On Wednesday, it was reported that Barcelona consider Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino to be a priority target for the summer transfer window. The 27-year-old is highly-regarded by new manager Hansi Flick, and when he begins work next week, a deal could be started upon by the club’s sporting department.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona, and especially sporting director Deco, have a strong interest in Merino, although for now, Barcelona’s interest is only that. As per MD, no discussions have taken place with La Real nor Merino’s representatives.

Currently, the only talks taking place involving Merino are with La Real, who are very keen to tie him down to a new contract, as his existing deal expires at the end of next season. If no agreement can be reached, it opens the door for Barcelona to get their man, likely at a cut-price arrangement.

Merino would be a top signing for Barcelona, especially if they can acquire him cheaply. He’d perfectly suit Flick’s 4-2-3-1 system, although it won’t be easy to get out of Real Sociedad, even if a new contract cannot be agreed upon.
