Barcelona will not overdo title celebration against Espanyol due to past events

Barcelona are on the verge of being crowned La Liga champions once again, and it could happen as soon as Wednesday night.

All eyes will be on Real Madrid’s match against Mallorca because if Los Blancos fail to win, the title will officially belong to the Blaugrana.

However, according to SPORT, inside the Barça dressing room there is a strong consensus that the players want to earn the title by winning on the pitch themselves.

That opportunity will come on Thursday, when Barcelona face Espanyol. A victory in that fixture would secure the league title regardless of Madrid’s result, and doing it through their own merit is the preferred scenario for Hansi Flick’s squad.

And why is that?

This would not be the first time Barcelona have sealed the title at Espanyol’s home ground. Two seasons ago, the Blaugrana clinched the league with a 4-2 win in the Catalan derby.

That night, the players celebrated openly on the pitch, even forming a celebratory rondo in the centre circle. The act was viewed by Espanyol fans as disrespectful and sparked ugly scenes in the aftermath.

Because of that experience, the current squad and coaching staff are keen to show more restraint if history repeats itself. Should they win the title against Espanyol again, the post-match celebrations on the pitch will be kept low-key and respectful.

The main celebrations, including the traditional photos and festivities, will be saved for the dressing room where the whole squad can participate in private.

No extravagant celebration until Sunday

Regardless of whether the title is secured on Wednesday due to Madrid slipping up, or on Thursday with a Barça victory, the official celebrations with fans will take place on Sunday at Montjuïc after the match against Villarreal.

That will give the club a chance to celebrate the triumph with its supporters in a more controlled and festive environment.

There is a clear sense of maturity from Barcelona this time. The focus is on finishing the job professionally, showing respect to opponents, and then celebrating with dignity.
