The 2021/22 campaign is barely over, but fans of Manchester City will be licking their lips and waiting with bated breath for the new season to start.

The Premier League champions have already done some stunning transfer business, having completed the capture of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Widely regarded as one of the most lethal strikers in the game, the Norwegian will elevate the level of this squad.

At the same time, the Citizens have also captured the signing of Argentine striker Julian Alvarez from River Plate. A deal to sign the young forward was struck in January before Man City loaned him back to River Plate for the remainder of the season.

And, the youngster is turning heads with his performances in South America, most recently plundering six goals in a single game against Alianza Lima.

The prospect of Haaland and Alvarez arriving in the summer is certain to excite the Man City fans. However, it could all have turned out very differently.

It is no secret that Barcelona were very much interested in signing Haaland, but the finances of the deal scuppered their chances. Now, it has emerged that the Catalans could have signed Julian Alvarez from River Plate, but turned down the chance.

Indeed, as reported by Mediaset Sport’s David Bernabeu Reverter, Josep Maria Minguella, the agent who had played a major role in Lionel Messi’s move to Barcelona all those years ago, had offered Julian Alvarez to the Catalans.

The update claims that everything was in place for the Blaugrana to land the 22-year-old striker from River Plate. However, Barcelona decided to turn down the opportunity and eventually the Argentine international ended up moving to Manchester City.

Having rejected Alvarez and failed to sign Haaland, Barcelona find themselves chasing the services of Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski in the summer transfer window. Whether they are successful in their attempts to land the Polish striker remains to be seen.
