FC Barcelona continue to work on contract renewals this summer to tie down important players. For the Catalan giants, it is essential to guarantee the continuity of their most essential assets and stars. However, some deals are taking more time for Barcelona to wrap up than others.

Recently, one of the deals that the club is reportedly working on and negotiations are apparently quite advanced for is the renewal of Jules Kounde. The French defender looks to be the next person to be considered for a renewal thanks to his strong performances.

However, there is another player after Kounde who is reportedly next in line for a contract renewal as well. That player would just so happen to be Frenkie de Jong, a 28-year-old Dutch midfielder who is also a club captain at Barcelona.

Barcelona want to extend De Jong’s stay until 2028

In his case, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barça is looking to extend his contract until 2028 through a new agreement. With his current deal set to expire in 2026, it is crucial for La Blaugrana to tie him down through another renewal this summer.

By extending his deal until 2028, Barcelona would guarantee two extra seasons from him. Moreover, the club is reportedly looking to add in a way for him to earn himself an additional year’s extension until 2029 if his performances are strong enough in his last guaranteed year to earn it.

Thus, in theory, the player would potentially be 32 years old if he is still at the club in 2029. Interestingly, having joined Barcelona in 2019, that would also mean that he would have been at the club for a decade in its entirety and it would highlight his consistency and level for the team.

A key player for Hansi Flick

After all, De Jong remains one of the fundamental pieces of Hansi Flick’s system and he is a guaranteed starter for him at the moment. Having made the pivot role his through his performances, the Dutch maestro is someone that Barcelona undeniably wish to retain the services of.

For now, the club is waiting for the player’s approval to resume negotiations with someone considering his recent agent-related issues. Once that is cleared, Barcelona will look to reach an agreement on all levels to guarantee De Jong’s continuity.
