It was in September 2024 when Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a serious knee injury that potentially ruled him out of the entire season.

The incident occurred in the La Liga game against Villarreal where the goalkeeper sustained a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee and underwent surgery the following day.

There was no specific timeline mentioned for his return by the club but given the nature of the injury, it was suspected that he could be out for around nine months making it unlikely that he would play again this season.

However, earlier this month, Barcelona fans were given a boost of optimism when Ter Stegen shared images on social media of himself back on the pitch at the Ciutat Esportiva.

Now, SPORT reports that the Barcelona captain is making progress in his recovery process, working towards a potential return before the end of the season.

The German goalkeeper is pushing to be fit by May, hoping to get some minutes before the season concludes.

His commitment was evident this Wednesday when he showed up at the training facilities despite having a day off – something common among injured players but a clear sign of his dedication to the team.

Ter Stegen is making steady progress in his recovery. While Barcelona initially had little hope of recovering him before the summer, his rehabilitation is advancing well, raising the possibility of a return for the crucial final stretch of the campaign.

This season marked Ter Stegen’s first as Barcelona’s club captain, and even though he has been sidelined, he has remained present for key moments.

One such occasion was Barça’s victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final, where he proudly lifted the trophy as captain.

The veteran superstar will be hoping to repeat that at the end of the season again by helping Barcelona win the league.
