Wojciech Szczesny has emerged as one of the surprises of the season. Initially arriving as an emergency replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, he has since taken over as Barcelona’s starting goalkeeper.
Szczesny signed a short-term contract upon arriving, which stands to expire next month. But Barcelona are eager for him to remain at the club for another season at the very least and talks over a new deal have been taking place.
Following the 4-3 El Clasico victory over Real Madrid on Sunday, Szczesny spoke to Canal+ Poland and revealed key details about his future – along with a personal twist.
“I will not hide that I have an offer to continue at Barcelona for two more years. They have already presented it to me, but I have asked for time. I need to decide with my family what is best for all of us,” Szczesny said, as quoted by SPORT.
The Polish goalkeeper made it clear that the final word will not be his alone.
“My wife will be the one to make the decision, whether we stay or go to Marbella to play golf,” he admitted.
“I owe it to her to decide this together, and we have not done that yet. She makes most of the decisions, and I am not ashamed of it,” the Barcelona goalkeeper continued.
“I used to make the football calls as a professional, but this is a unique situation. We all agreed I would come for a year to fulfil our dreams and then return to golf.”

Szczesny acknowledged that a decision must be made quickly to allow Barcelona to plan.
“Honestly, I do not know what will happen, and I say that sincerely. We will decide this month because we need to sort out logistics, such as schools or moving, depending on what we choose. As of now, nothing is certain. We are thinking about it.”
The goalkeeper, visibly emotional, described his time at Barcelona as a dream come true.
“I was retired, and now I find myself in this situation. It may seem strange since Inter knocked us out, but this Barça team is the best in the world right now. What these young players are doing is incredible and deserves recognition,” he noted.
“It is a shame we could not win everything, but we came close and have built something very important for the future.”
Szczesny’s final decision holds strategic importance for Barcelona. With the contract offer reportedly spanning two seasons, it would effectively secure the goalkeeper position and delay any search for an alternative.
If he accepts, the club would focus on reinforcing other areas of the squad, postponing a long-term restructuring of the goalkeeping position.
