The first half of the 2024-25 season saw a lot of uncertainty regarding the goalkeeping position at FC Barcelona. Marc Andre Ter Stegen was the clear starter for the Blaugranes at the start of the season, but he suffered a serious injury only a few games into the campaign and still remains sidelined.
Inaki Pena became the starter after the German’s injury, but since the turn of the year, Hansi Flick has relied exclusively on Wojciech Szczesny to be his starting goalkeeper, and the Polish goalkeeper has not given any reasons for the trainer to change his mind after somewhat shaky first few games.
The appointment of the Pole as the starting goalie has accompanied a clear improvement in the Catalan team’s performance, and this is clear from the fact that Szczesny is yet to lose a game while wearing the Barcelona shirt.
Furthermore, as Mundo Deportivo has noted, the next match against Borussia Dortmund can see Szczesny reach the record of one of the biggest Blaugrana legends.
Since his debut in the Copa del Rey tie against Barbastro, the Pole has played 22 matches for Hansi Flick’s side, and enjoys a record of 19 wins, 3 draws, and no defeats.
If he remains undefeated in the second leg of the UCL quarter-finals against Dortmund, he will take his run of unbeaten games after his debut to 23, which is the third-best in the Catalan club’s history, and is currently held by none other than Johan Cruyff.
The legendary Dutchman went 23 games unbeaten during the 1970s, but there are two more players with an even better record following their debuts. At the top of this list is the former midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who went 30 games without a defeat after his debut. On the second number is Paulinho, who went 25 matches without defeat.
Thus, despite it being only a few months since Szczesny arrived at Barcelona, he is already on course to reach the numbers of one of the biggest Blaugrana legends, and the fans will be particularly keen to see him do so as he is already a favourite.
