Barcelona’s current financial system doesn’t seem to want to allow anyone breathing space. Moments after the club believes it has found a solution to a problem that had plagued them, another unprecedented issue appears out of the blue.

In this case, the problems have followed a sort of script: the players Barça seeks to part ways with will either be unwanted in the market or unwilling to leave; those they wish to keep will be reluctant to accept lower wages.

Jordi Alba falls neatly in the latter category. The Spaniard is adamant on keeping his salary as is, despite all the outside influence geared at pushing him to reduce it.

The four captains each set a precedent by cutting their wages in half for the betterment of the club, but Alba, rebellious, refuses to.

Naturally, as was reported by Catalan journalist Gerard Romero during his Twitch stream, there are people within Barcelona who would be more than willing to part ways with the Spaniard this summer, given his stance on reducing his wages.

The Catalans have ready alternatives to him if this deal takes place. Barça have shown their interest in Valencia skipper Jose Gaya on numerous occasions this summer and over the course of the 2020/21 campaign. Last season in his left-lack role, he finished with seven assists and a goal to his name. These numbers are a far cry from those which Alba put up last season, though.

Another riskier option would be to trust the recently renewed Alejandro Balde in the coveted left-back spot, alongside American right-back Sergino Dest who can occupy both flanks with relative ease.

At the moment, there are few offers, if any, for the Barça number 18.
