Andreas Christensen has been amongst Barcelona’s primary options to reinforce the centre-back position for over a month now. The Chelsea star is in the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge, and a renewal seems like a far-fetched dream.

According to reports from DiMarzio as relayed by Nathan Gissing, the defender has communicated to the London based side that he wants a new challenge next season. With his position over his future decided, several clubs are said to be interested in his signing.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich lead the race to sign the Dane. However, the one hurdle in completing his transfer is the massive signing bonus demanded by the player’s agent.

At Barcelona, the need to find a viable yet economical solution to make any progress in the market is the top priority. Though Christensen would be a dream addition to Xavi’s setup, the large financial demands could throw off the Catalans from the race.

The situation becomes more clear when one considers that Laporta is targeting the signing of Erling Haaland in the summer. After the highly anticipated deal that could go north of €100 million, Barcelona will not have a lot of funds to play around with for other positions.

Christensen has been phenomenal for his club once again this season, overseeing five clean sheets in just 11 starts. Moreover, he averages 1.8 interceptions and three clearances per game.

At just 25 years of age, Christensen is hot property in the market. However, it is looking more and more likely that Barcelona will scout for cheaper options in the market.

The situation will reverse, however, if he opts to value the prominent role that Barcelona offer over a bump in his wages.
