Earlier this month reports claimed that Barcelona would be launching a third attempt to try and sign Cedric Bakambu in the January transfer window when his contract with Chinese Super League outfit Beijing Guoan expired.

The 30-year-old has been on the radars of the Catalans for some time now. In fact, the Blaugrana have made two previous attempts to sign him up, with the most recent one coming in January 2020. The DR Congo striker was on his way to Catalonia when the plug was pulled on a deal, with the club instead signing Martin Braithwaite.

However, Bakambu is again back on the club’s agenda heading into the winter transfer window. Now, Fichajes is claiming that the Catalans will not have to wait till January to sign him as the former Villarreal man has become a free agent.

The experienced striker’s contract with Beijing Guoan was supposed to run until the end of December 2021, post which he would be available on a Bosman move. However, his deal with the Chinese outfit was terminated earlier today on mutual agreement, which means he is already available to be signed up for free.

Bakambu is a player who is well-versed with the rigours of La Liga, having made over 100 appearances for Villarreal during which he scored 47 goals and created five more. He has maintained a healthy scoring record since moving to China, having produced a return of 58 goals in 87 matches for Beijing Guoan.

At 30, the Congolese international still has a few years of football left to offer at the highest level. The fact that he will not cost a penny in transfer fee makes him an even more attractive prospect for Barca. While wages could be an issue due to the club reaching their salary limit, Sergio Aguero’s potential retirement could pave the way for the Catalans to register him.

But Barcelona will need to act quickly if they wish to snap him up as there will be no shortage of suitors for a striker of his pedigree and experience.
