In a brilliant performance against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, Raphinha has cemented his place in Barcelona’s history by equalling a legendary record previously held by none other than Lionel Messi.

It must be noted that While Robert Lewandowski took home the MVP of the match, it was Raphinha who made a statement by matching Messi’s record for the most goal involvements in a single Champions League campaign.

The Brazilian winger’s contribution of 12 goals and 7 assists brings his total to 19, a feat that Messi set during the 2011-12 season with 14 goals and 5 assists.

A much-needed high level performance

This remarkable achievement marks a huge milestone in Raphinha’s career. It is clear that his return to form following his international commitments with Brazil has been instrumental in Barcelona’s dominant 4-0 victory over Dortmund.

And with the second leg still to play, the 28-year-old Brazilian has the opportunity to surpass Messi’s record if he continues to contribute in the same vein.

With Barcelona progressing to the semi-finals looking increasingly likely, Raphinha could extend his tally further. This could place him in a unique position to etch his name alongside some of the greatest in Champions League history.

It is also worth noting that Raphinha achieved this feat in just 11 matches, the same number Messi played to reach his 19 goal involvements back in 2011-12.

Interestingly, while Raphinha’s 19 contributions put him in Messi’s league, UEFA Champons League’s all-time goal contribution record for a single Champions League edition still stands far off.

That honour belongs to Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored an impressive 17 goals and five assists in the 2013/14 edition of the competition. For now, that mark remains a daunting target for any player, including Raphinha.
