Nico Williams came close to donning the Blaugrana jersey last summer. However, a potential transfer to FC Barcelona fell through due to the club’s financial struggles and Nico’s desire to remain loyal to Athletic Bilbao. As a result, the talented forward stayed with the Basque club for another season.
While his decision aligned with Athletic’s ambitions, Nico’s individual performances this season have fallen short of expectations—especially when compared to Barcelona’s attacking options.
After a stellar 2023-24 season that saw Nico Williams win the Copa del Rey and shine at the European Championship, where he was among the standout performers alongside Lamine Yamal, expectations were high for the young winger. The summer transfer window even fueled speculation about his move to Barcelona, but the deal collapsed at the last hurdle.
Under Ernesto Valverde’s management, Athletic Bilbao has enjoyed an excellent start to the 2024-25 season. They currently sit fourth in La Liga, fighting to secure a Champions League spot for the first time in a decade. However, Nico’s form has been underwhelming.
In 29 matches this season across all competitions, Nico Williams has recorded just three goals and five assists in 2,040 minutes. His contributions come at an average of one goal or assist every 255 minutes—a stark decline from last season’s pace, where he ended the campaign with 10 goals and 20 assists, including a memorable strike in the European Championship final.

As speculation lingers over what might have been if Nico had joined Barça, comparisons to the Blaugrana’s current wingers are inevitable. The rise of Raphinha and Ferran Torres this season under Hansi Flick has showcased the impact a well-defined system can have on player efficiency.
Raphinha has been a revelation, tallying an astounding 23 goals and 11 assists so far this season. Meanwhile, Ferran Torres has thrived in a more defined role as Barça’s super sub.
Despite limited playing time—804 minutes across 22 matches—Torres has already contributed seven goals and three assists. His efficiency is remarkable, averaging a goal or assist every 80 minutes, three times more effective than Nico Williams this season.
Despite his struggles, Nico Williams remains a player of immense potential. His raw talent and ability to thrive in a system like Barcelona’s could make him an attractive option for next summer, especially with the Blaugrana exploring reinforcements in attack.
The 22-year-old’s skill set and ceiling suggest that his current form may be a temporary dip rather than a long-term concern.
For now, however, Barcelona appears well-covered in attack. With the untouchable trio of Lamine Yamal, Lewandowski, and Raphinha leading the line and Ferran Torres proving his worth off the bench, the Catalan side continues to reap the rewards of a balanced and effective offensive setup.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Nico Williams to see whether he can rediscover the form that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young talents—and whether Barcelona will reignite their interest in the Basque forward next summer.
