Barcelona are now working against the clock to free up salary space in order to register the players without a first-team number this week ahead of the match against Levante. However, it will not be easy.

The departure of Inaki Pena could be settled soon and would help the situation to some extent, but Oriol Romeu’s exit still requires final negotiations.

Termination talks on hold

According to SPORT, the process of negotiating Romeu’s contract termination has been delayed by the absence of sporting director Deco from Barcelona, and one last meeting remains to finalise the move.

For now, there is no agreement, as the midfielder, who has made things easier for the club, awaits the final offer from Barcelona so that he can accept one of the proposals on the table.

Romeu still has one year left on his contract. His salary is not among the highest in the squad, but it is significant enough to make it difficult for interested clubs to take it on. Barcelona will need to compensate the player, and figures are already being discussed.

The deal could be structured as a loan, with Barça covering part of the wages, or as a termination of contract, in which case the club would pay compensation that would allow the midfielder to sign elsewhere.

Romeu has several options available, mainly from La Liga clubs, but he has also attracted interest from MLS sides.

Girona, Sevilla, Valencia and Real Oviedo are all waiting for his decision, and the midfielder himself is keen to close this chapter as soon as possible so that he can join his new team.

In any case, negotiations are expected to intensify from now on, and it is not out of the question that an agreement could be reached next week.

However, this would mean his departure would not free up salary space in time for the next matchday, preventing Barcelona from registering some of the pending players.

The Blaugrana do hope that a decisive step can be taken this Friday, but an agreement cannot be guaranteed with full certainty.

After returning from loan at Girona this summer, Romeu was already aware that his continuity at Barcelona would not be possible. He has trained with professionalism, and the coaching staff have been pleased with his effort and attitude, as has the club.

Now, both parties must agree on a solution that allows Romeu to maintain his salary level while helping Barcelona save money to register new players.
