Inaki Pena’s situation at FC Barcelona has taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks. The 25-year-old La Masia product had been the first-choice in goal for Hansi Flick following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury but lost his place to Wojciech Szczesny since last month.

The decision from the manager has sparked debate with those within the club even admitting that the situation was not handled in the best possible manner.

Pena, for his part, is still unclear about why he was demoted out of the blue and Flick’s decision has put the goalkeeper’s future at the club in doubt, given his contract expires in 2026.

Relationship strained

Now, AS reports that the relationship between Pena and Hansi Flick has suffered in recent weeks and ‘gone cold’.

According to the Spanish outlet, there have been disagreements in more than one meeting between the player and the manager, especially because of the way in which Pena asked for explanations about the change in goalkeeping.

The 25-year-old had a stint on loan at Galatasaray in the past and will have no problem exploring other opportunities in the summer if things do not change at Barça and he is offered a starting role elsewhere.

An alternate report from Miguel Rico also claims that things are not well between the two, with the La Masia graduate upset with Flick’s sudden decision to bench him in favour of Szczesny.

As such, Pena is in no hurry to consider a contract renewal from Barcelona. Deco, for his part, does not want to go into the next season with any player in the squad left with only one year on their deals.

As such, the Barça director might attempt to renew the 25-year-old Spaniard even if only to sell him for a good deal in the summer.
