A leading member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has admitted that he was forced into a premature departure from proceedings on the international front on Thursday.
The player in question? Robert Lewandowski.
Frontman Lewandowski, for his part, was afforded his latest starting berth on the international front last night.
En route to Poland’s 3-2 Nations League victory over Scotland, the 36-year-old proved himself the star of the show, too, notching a goal and an assist to keep alive a stellar start to the season.
Late in the action at Hampden Park, ‘Lewa’, in turn, was hauled off, with another excellent night’s work under his belt.
It has since been revealed, however, that as much actually came with the veteran goalscorer struggling for fitness.
Speaking to the media post-match, Lewandowski confirmed that he requested to be substituted against Scotland, amid concern that some minor ‘discomfort’ may lead to something altogether more serious:
“I felt discomfort and then there was some pain,” the former Bayern Munich man began, as cited by Mundo Deportivo. “I realised that if I took a risk today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow it could be much worse. For the good of the team and for my health, the decision was made to leave the field. The season will be very demanding. I could have up to 70 games ahead of me, so I need to manage my strength and energy wisely.”
