Barcelona star Marc-André ter Stegen was left hugely unimpressed with the decision-making of manager Hansi Flick, following the club’s final fixture of the recently-completed campaign.
That’s according to Diario Sport, who have this week provided an insight into the situation.
Goalkeeper Ter Stegen was for his part forced to watch on from the bench in Barcelona’s final day trip to the Basque Country.
This came after Hansi Flick opted to reward the professionalism of fellow shot-stopper Iñaki Peña, affording the 26-year-old the start between the posts at San Mamés in what is expected to mark his final game with the club.
And safe to say, this call did not go down at all well with Barca’s long-time no.1…
As per a report from Sport, amid building tensions between Ter Stegen and Hansi Flick owing to the latter’s failure to return his compatriot to a consistent starting berth over the season’s final weeks:
‘Unknowingly, he provoked anger from Ter Stegen.’
This came for a pair of reasons.
First off, Ter Stegen was desperate to feature on the final day to continue building match sharpness ahead of Germany’s Nations League campaign.
Not only that, but the 33-year-old missed out on what is described as ‘an easy bonus that he had in his contract for games played’.
