According to Mundo Deportivo, Hansi Flick’s coaching staff does not see Marc-Andre ter Stegen as the automatic first-choice goalkeeper for next season if Joan Garcia is signed from Espanyol.

This marks a major shift in planning at Barcelona, as the club prepares for a new era between the posts.

Although Ter Stegen has been one of Barça’s most reliable players for the past decade, the arrival of Flick has brought fresh ideas.

The German goalkeeper is not expected to leave the club just yet, but his starting spot is far from guaranteed.

The coaching staff, board, and sporting department are reportedly all on the same page that if Garcia signs, he will be given a real chance to become the new number one.

Garcia’s signing could signal the end of an era

Barcelona’s interest in Joan Garcia is no longer a rumour, it is serious. The young Espanyol shot-stopper is highly rated, and the club sees him as a long-term solution in goal.

Flick’s staff admire Garcia’s composure, reflexes, and confidence in distribution. If the transfer goes through, the plan is clear that the Espanyol keeper will be the first-choice goalkeeper going forward.

This puts Ter Stegen in a difficult position. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup on the horizon, he needs regular minutes to stay in contention for the German national team.

Staying at Barcelona, where his place is under threat, might not be the best move for his international hopes.

The coaching staff reportedly believe it would be best for Ter Stegen to explore a move elsewhere where he will be guaranteed playing time.

Despite being under contract until 2028 and having served the club for ten seasons, the feeling within Barcelona is that it is time to bring in a younger keeper. If Garcia does sign, it could mark the end of an era for Ter Stegen at Camp Nou.
