It’s become clear why Julian Araujo was not called upon by Hansi Flick during Barcelona’s final two pre-season tour matches in the United States, against Real Madrid and AC Milan – the Mexican defender is on course to be leaving the club that he signed for in the winter of 2023.
As reported by Sport, Barcelona are in advanced negotiations with Bournemouth over the sale of Araujo. Girona, Real Betis and Sevilla had all shown interest, but the young right-back now looks set to continue his career in the Premier League.
A deal would be worth in the region of €9m, which would include fixed fees and variables. Araujo would become the third first team departure of the summer, following the sale of Marc Guiu to Chelsea, and Oriol Romeu’s return to Girona on loan.
Right-back is a position that Barcelona are well-covered in, with Jules Kounde, Hector Fort and Alex Valle as options. Despite this, Araujo’s departure could open the door for Joao Cancelo to return, although he would only do so if Manchester City do not insist on a mandatory buy option as part of a loan agreement.
