As we approach the summer transfer window, Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona continues to hang in the balance.

The 25-year-old has been heavily linked with an exit in the upcoming transfer window as he is seen as one of the club’s most sellable assets amid financial troubles.

Eve though manager Xavi Hernandez continues to insist that the Dutchman remains a key part of the plans for the future, he always specifies that things could change due to the economic conditions at Camp Nou.

De Jong is attracting strong interest from Manchester United, where his former AFC Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, is keen on a reunion. There have also been reports of interest from the likes of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Now, Mundo Deportivo has come up with a fresh report claiming that Xavi would sanction the departure of de Jong only if Barcelona would be in a position to sign a top-quality replacement for the Netherlands international.

And, as per the report, the Barça manager and technical staff do not see Valencia midfielder and captain Carlos Soler as the ideal man to fill in for de Jong, despite strong interest in the Spaniard.

Indeed, the 25-year-old has been on the Blaugrana’s radar for a while, with reports even claiming that an agreement was in place between the two parties over a potential summer move.

While the aforementioned report does not refute Barça’s interest in Soler, it claims that the club do not see him as the replacement for de Jong.

Instead, the Catalan heavyweights believe that Manchester City superstar Bernardo Silva would be the most ideal candidate to replace the Dutchman in case the club decided to part ways in the summer. However, signing the Portuguese will be anything but easy.

As for Soler, he is entering the final year of his contract at Valencia and has been offered to Barcelona, along with teammate Jose Gaya. However, the Catalans have rejected the chance to land the duo for €60 million.
