Barcelona are set to sign a left-winger this summer, as it is considered a strategic position to strengthen in the club’s new sporting project.

After Nico Williams’ unexpected contract renewal with Athletic Club, Barça have reopened discussions regarding Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford.

Rafael Leao back on the agenda

However, according to SPORT, another name back on the table for Barcelona is Rafael Leao of AC Milan.

The Portuguese international’s name was already discussed during last summer’s window by the Blaugrana and is once again being considered.

Talks are being held through Jorge Mendes, who, although not Leao’s agent, maintains a strong influence over the player and enjoys an excellent relationship with Milan.

The 26-year-old forward’s release clause stands at €150 million, but AC Milan would be willing to negotiate for around €70 million plus add-ons.

In terms of playing style, Leao might perhaps be the closest profile to Nico Williams, though the cost of his transfer would likely exceed that of Luis Diaz, and certainly that of Rashford. But his age and clear potential for further development are seen as major positives.

Leao had an inconsistent season and experienced some issues with his coaches at Milan. He would be more than willing to sign for Barcelona, but at present, he is not among the sporting department’s top priorities – unless current transfer plans encounter setbacks.

Bayern Munich have also held talks to sign Leao earlier this summer, but eventually backed out, although it became clear that Milan were open to negotiating.

As mentioned earlier, though, Leao is not seen as a top priority, with Diaz being seen as the Plan A. However, should things not work out in pursuit of the Liverpool winger, the Portuguese speedster could become a serious option.
