It has been a difficult week for Barcelona, who have all but given up hopes of signing Nico Williams, who has suddenly announced a renewal at Athletic Club until 2035.

Barcelona are rightfully frustrated at Nico and his agent. But the club appear to have moved on already and are working towards building the core for the season ahead.

One of Barcelona’s priorities this July has been to renew the contract of Wojciech Szczesny, who has officially become a free agent after running down his contract at Camp Nou.

Barcelona renew the deal for Szczesny

ESPN has confirmed that Barcelona have secured a renewal of Szczesny this summer, in what could be massive relief for the club.

Szczesny was one of Barça’s rising stars since the turn of the year, and with Marc-Andre ter Stegen facing an uncertain future at the club, Barcelona primarily see the Pole as the main alternative to Joan Garcia.

This is not something that is new, however, as Barcelona have been eyeing up a two-month since a long time.

Barcelona had offered the 35-year-old a new contract back in May, but Szczesny delayed his response to consider his family’s preferences, especially with the possibility of returning to Marbella, where they had settled after his initial retirement from football in 2024.

He has now chosen to continue in Catalonia, much to the delight of the Barcelona hierarchy.

The club’s decision to renew Szczesny comes at a critical time.

With Ter Stegen’s future still uncertain and Inaki Peña open to a transfer, Szczesny is now expected to compete directly with new €25 million signing Joan Garcia for the No.1 spot next season.
