Barcelona has officially been named the most popular football club in both men and women’s football.
Although the men’s team has struggled to live up to past glory in recent seasons, it’s still known as the side that has featured Lionel Messi, Neymar, Diego Maradona, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o.
In fact, it is widely considered that Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona team in the late 2000s, which included Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, was one of the greatest of all time.
The women’s team has become equally as iconic, winning the Champions League in 2021.
With a lineup that boasts Aitana Bonmatí, Keira Walsh, Caroline Graham Hansen, Mapi León and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, the side is worthy of the sell-out Camp Nou crowds that they pull in.
The study found that 83 percent of respondents supported a European men’s football team, while 53% followed a European women’s football team.
One in three of those who supported a men’s side also followed a women’s team, with the highest conversion rate among Lyon and Barcelona fans.
Interestingly, Lyon and Barcelona are the two teams to have the most success in the Women’s Champions League in recent years.
