After resolving the future of coach Xavi Hernandez, Barcelona are expected to divert their attention toward the forthcoming summer transfer window.

Barça will not only be vying to offload some players from the first team but also address key positions in the squad.

One area that requires immediate attention is the defensive midfield position, with the ongoing season a testament to the problems Barcelona have faced at the base of midfield.

As such, the Catalans have drawn up a list of options they intend to pursue, which includes a long-time target of the club and a man in high demand – Martin Zubimendi

Zubimendi opens up about exit rumours

Zubimendi has been avidly admired by the Barcelona coaching staff, as the club previously also tried to sign him but fell short due to financial complications.

Heading into the transfer window, Barça are anticipated to revive their interest in the Real Sociedad midfielder.

When asked about his future, Zubimendi did not reveal any hints about his next destination but claimed he would only hit the exit door if La Real are no longer content with his performances.

“I am happy at Real Sociedad, it’s my home. I can’t say that I will play my entire career at Real because perhaps the club doesn’t want me to continue in the future. I don’t worry about those rumours,” he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Barcelona have prioritized recruitment of defensive midfielder

As has been well-established by now a significant portion of Barcelona’s transfer money in the summer will go toward acquiring a new number six.

In addition to favoring Zubimendi, Xavi has reportedly been a massive advocate for the signing of Bayern Munich talisman Joshua Kimmich.

Time will tell who Barcelona end up signing, but it is increasingly likely they are no longer going to use stopgap measures.
