FC Barcelona, as in previous summers, have once again found themselves surrounded by off-field drama during the transfer window.

While the Catalan club continues to grapple with familiar registration problems, a far more pressing concern has emerged in the form of growing tension involving club captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

This summer, the Catalan giants have taken decisive steps to reshape their goalkeeping department. They secured the signing of Joan Garcia from Espanyol and extended the contract of Wojciech Szczesny. These actions have all but ended ter Stegen’s future at the club.

Behind the scenes, tensions between ter Stegen and the club have reportedly escalated. There is talk of stripping him of the captaincy ahead of the new season, a move that would have been unthinkable in previous campaigns.

Amid this uncertainty, Paris Saint-Germain has emerged as a possible destination for Ter Stegen this summer. According to a report from Fichajes, PSG has shown strong interest in acquiring the services of the German international.

The Champions League winners from last season could be in the market to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, considering Gianluigi Donnarumma is in the final year of his contract and has yet to put pen to paper on a new deal. Furthermore, he is also linked with a move away from the club.

Ter Stegen’s pedigree in top-tier competitions makes him an ideal candidate for the Parisians. Although the German has so far resisted the idea of leaving Barcelona, the prospect of joining PSG could shift his stance.

It is worth noting that even if the Ligue 1 giants sign Ter Stegen, he has undergone surgery and will be out for 3–4 months, if not longer. However, he would be available to play after that, and with a World Cup around the corner, Luis Enrique might be getting a very motivated version of the German goalkeeper.

Talks between the two parties could intensify in the coming days if the goalkeeper agrees to an exit. With a World Cup around the corner, ter Stegen might also want to be in the mix and be somewhere he is assured to play.

Barcelona is no longer that club. It remains to be seen how the parties involved arrive at an amicable solution.
