Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s recovery from knee surgery has taken a surprisingly positive turn, according to a report from SPORT.
The German goalkeeper, who underwent surgery at the end of September, was initially expected to be sidelined for around eight to nine months.
This timeline effectively ruled him out for the rest of the season. However, there is now growing optimism within Barcelona that he could make a return to action as early as May.
The 32-year-old’s recovery is progressing much faster than anticipated. Just over four months after his surgery, Ter Stegen has already resumed work at the club’s training ground.
He has even started light training sessions on the pitch, a significant step in his rehabilitation process. This swift progress has fuelled hopes that he could be available for some of the crucial matches at the end of the season.

Sources close to the situation suggest that Ter Stegen has informed the coaching staff to consider him for selection in May.
This period includes the last five matches of the league campaign as well as potential Champions League fixtures, such as the semi-final second leg and the final if Barcelona advances that far.
Despite the current wave of optimism, there is a sense of caution within the club. The final phase of recovery is often the most challenging and unpredictable.
Medical clearance is one thing, but regaining full match fitness and receiving clearance from the coaching staff are separate hurdles.
The club’s medical team is understandably cautious, aware that any setback during this delicate stage could delay his return.
Nevertheless, the possibility of Ter Stegen returning to the pitch this season is now very real. His presence would undoubtedly be a significant boost for Barcelona as they push for success in both domestic and European competitions.
