De Jong was a target for Barça during the summer just gone but the 21-year-old ended up staying at Ajax and has confirmed he will stay there for the rest of this season.

However, it seems unlikely the Eredivisie club will be able to keep hold of the midfielder beyond the end of the current campaign, and the Dutch international has dropped several hints that he sees his future at Camp Nou.

But reports in recent days suggest the Blaugrana could face some pretty stiff competition for De Jong’s signature. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus have all been linked with a move for the player and according to Mundo Deportivo, his market value has subsequently shot up from €30-40m to closer to €80m.

When asked about interest from other clubs earlier this week, De Jong’s agent Ali Dursun suggested the final decision will lie with Ajax.

“I can neither confirm nor deny this,’ Dursun told Dutch outlet De Telegraaf

“You should ask Marc Overmars. I send all clubs that contact me over to him.”

But Mundo Deportivo say Barcelona feel the ball is in their court, the situation is under control and in order to ensure they get their man, they could well try to sign De Jong in January and loan him back to Ajax for the rest of the season.
