The situation surrounding Marc-Andre ter Stegen has created an atmosphere of nervousness around FC Barcelona.

The 31-year-old first-choice goalkeeper returned from the German national team camp last month with a back problem, which was initially thought to be a minor issue.

But, Ter Stegen has now gone on to miss three games for Barcelona, with his recovery not going at the desired pace through conservative treatment.

Furthermore, with there reportedly being some complications, all signs point towards the goalkeeper undergoing surgery, which could potentially rule him out for 2-3 months.

Barcelona not planning on signing a new goalkeeper

A decision regarding Ter Stegen undergoing surgery has not been made yet, with the Barcelona second captain taking time to assess all options.

But even if he opts for surgery and is sidelined for an extended period of time, as things stand, Barcelona are not planning on signing a new goalkeeper in January to make up for his absence, reports SPORT.

The Blaugrana plan on continuing to back Inaki Pena, who has done admirably in the last three games when Ter Stegen has been unavailable. Youngsters like Diego Kochen and Aron Yaakobishvili acting as the reserves.

Circumstances could change

However, if things change and there are some complications, Barcelona are keeping an eye out on the goalkeeping market for potential reinforcements, the report adds.

One of the options for Barça, in that scenario, could be former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who is still a free agent, after having been released by the Premier League’s fallen giants in the summer.

Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal is unhappy with his current situation due to a lack of minutes and may be an alternative for the Catalan giants as he may consider a loan departure.

It must be noted that both De Gea and Ramsdale are also on Newcastle United’s radar, who are on the lookout for a goalkeeper after Nick Pope’s injury.

Veteran custodian Kasper Schmeichel at Anderlecht could be an option as well, while outside Europe, the likes of Bono and Roman Burki could be considered.

For now, though, there are no plans to sign anyone, although things might change depending on how Ter Stegen’s situation develops.
