It has been a season to forget for Barcelona midfield heavyweight Frenkie de Jong as he has suffered three injuries that have stopped him from having a significant impact on the proceedings.

The latest of the three injuries came last month during the Clasico against Real Madrid which ruled him out for the remainder of the season, with the midfielder now pencilled in to return just in time for the Euros.

While De Jong has played his last game for Barça this season, there is some fear that the Dutchman might have featured for the final time in a Blaugrana jersey for good as there is uncertainty over his future heading into the summer.

No response to renewal offer

Even though manager Xavi Hernandez has always insisted that Frenkie de Jong is a key part of his plans, SPORT reports that Barcelona management will consider a sale if a good offer arrives for him.

De Jong’s contract situation is one of the major factors behind the club taking that stance with his future.

The Netherlands international is contracted to Barça until 30 June 2026, a deal he signed in October 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, with Josep Maria Bartomeu’s previous board of directors.

The Dutchman took a pay cut at the time in return for recouping that money in the final years of his contract. That is why he is one of the most expensive players for the club in the present time.

Because of the cost of the contract and because it expires in 2026, the sporting management established contact with the player’s agent in October last year to offer him a new contract extension.

The caveat was that the new deal would be without a salary increase, but rather with a new adjustment.

But six months later, De Jong has still not responded to Deco’s first proposal, preferring to wait. If he does not want to renew, the club would opt for a sale.

Apart from saving his salary, Barcelona would also recoup a good sum from his sale due to the fact that Bayern Munich and Premier League clubs are interested.
