According to Javi Miguel on La TdT, Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets will sign a new contract with the club, albeit on a lowered salary.

Busquets’ current contract with the Catalan heavyweights stands to expire at the end of the ongoing campaign. It has sparked a lot of speculations over his future, especially with several clubs from abroad wanting to sign him on a free transfer.

Barcelona also recently sent in a contract offer to their captain. As per reports, the Catalan giants have offered a one-year contract with an option of an additional twelve months that will be based on the number of appearances he makes next term.

Furthermore, the contract offer proposed by the Blaugrana involves a major pay cut for the 34-year-old, considering the club’s financial situation. It has been indicated that Busquets could be set for a massive salary reduction to the tune o 69%.

With the international break now underway, it had been claimed that Busquets would take this time off to assess all his options and make a decision on his future.

And, it now seems like Busquets has decided to continue at Barcelona for one more season despite the prospect of a major wage reduction.

The veteran midfielder remains a key part in Xavi Hernandez’s plans and the manager is understood to have played an important role in convincing the club to offer him a new extension.

Should Busquets renew, Barcelona are unlikely to go into the market for another defensive midfielder, although they are likely to bring in Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City, with the German international’s contract at the Etihad Stadium set to expire in the summer.
