Barcelona’s recent season and splendid domestic run saw the squad’s value astronomically rise across all departments. The academy stars were some of the biggest winners but that does not go to say that the veterans did not benefit.
Frenkie de Jong, at this point a veteran in the dressing room, was one player who enjoyed a splendid redemption season after coming back from a tormenting injury and did well in the second half of the season as a regular starter.
His turnaround has been so impressive that he is now seriously considering a renewal at the club despite being on the verge of running down his contract not too long ago.
Speaking to Voetbal International (h/t Mundo Deportivo), the Barcelona midfielder was asked his opinion on his recent season at the club and whether he agreed with the general consensus that it was his best showing in the Blaugrana colours.
The Dutchman, however, refused to agree and stated that he played equally well, if not better, before his injury.
“No, people tend to exaggerate. It’s true that I was out for a long time with an ankle injury, but I played well before that too,” De Jong said.
“Personally I think I was at my best the season before my injury,” he added.

Adding on to why it may appear that his recent season was the best he has ever produced, he credited the entire team for the same and cited the harmony as the reason.
“The big difference is that we have a better team now, and that’s clear,” he noted.
Finally, he elaborated on how the team’s accomplishments and the domestic treble had a big part to play in seeing him get more recognition for the recent campaign.
“When you win every domestic title in Spain in one season and reach the Champions League semi-finals, you simply get more recognition.”
The player was then asked to recall the heartbreak in the UEFA Champions League against Inter Milan and the captain did not hold back in expressing his feelings.
“It hurts, yes, but I can accept the idea of PSG winning the tournament because they played good football.”
“Maybe it was good that Inter lost because if they hadn’t we might have been thinking ‘What if..’,” he added, looking at the silver lining.
Finally, he addressed the elephant in the room, his contract renewal at the club, saying,
“I want it and so does the club, so an agreement can be reached I hope it will be soon.”
