Barcelona are facing a potential setback ahead of their match against Sevilla as Frenkie de Jong is doubtful due to muscle discomfort.

According to a recent report from Adria Albets, this issue is unrelated to the ankle injury that has sidelined him for over five months.

Despite his recovery from the long-term injury, the Dutch midfielder is now dealing with a new concern, which could prevent him from being included in the squad.

Everything will be decided tomorrow

The final decision regarding de Jong’s availability will be made tomorrow morning. The medical team and coaching staff will assess his condition and determine if he is fit enough to play.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick had planned to start de Jong in the upcoming game, but his preparations were interrupted when the midfielder had to leave a training session early due to the discomfort.

Flick, in his press conference, acknowledged that he initially wanted to give de Jong a starting role against Sevilla. However, after Friday’s training session was cut short, the manager had to reconsider his approach.

“We have to see him tomorrow. He felt some discomfort yesterday, he started with the group today but then he was sidelined. I wanted to start him but we’ll see,” said the manager.

Caution needed

Given the player’s recent injury record, the decision to rest him may come as no surprise, especially since taking precautions with his fitness is crucial.

De Jong made his first appearance of the season in Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League match against Young Boys, where he played the final 15 minutes. He also came on as a substitute in the game against Alaves, playing only nine minutes.

With Sevilla being a critical fixture, the decision to include de Jong will ultimately depend on how his condition progresses, but the focus remains on ensuring he avoids further injury setbacks.

Given the situation, it is highly possible that Flick will opt to leave him out of the squad if any concerns about his fitness remain.
