After emerging as one of Barcelona’s best performers in pre-season, Gavi has had a relatively slow start to the new season.

As part of Hansi Flick’s merit-based rotation policy, the young midfielder has featured in only 66 minutes of action while failing to start a single league game so far.

Gavi’s tally of 66 minutes is lower than Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, two of Barcelona’s first-choice midfielders.

A recent report from MARCA has shed light on a slow start to the season for not just Gavi but also other midfielders, including Fermin Lopez and Marc Casado.

While Casado and Fermin still remain potential candidates for a departure, the same cannot be said for Gavi.

The report adds that the young midfielder is a true Barcelona fan and remains confident he can receive game time during the course of the campaign.

It must be noted that Gavi is coming on the back of a difficult 2024/25 campaign, where his progress was marred by injuries.

The youngster, in fact, is still relatively untested as far as Hansi Flick’s tactics are concerned and requires more time to get up to speed.

Flick, for his part, has been very patient and cautious with Gavi’s development. The German wants to make sure the youngster does not aggravate his injury.

From a sporting perspective, Gavi will be a direct competitor for de Jong in central midfield. But he can also operate in the attacking midfield position as well as play as a wide attacker.

These are still early stages of the season, with Flick not finding too many reasons to rest de Jong and Pedri. But once the fixtures intensify, it won’t be surprising to see the midfielder start more prominently.
