Barcelona midfield target turns down offer due to salary

Barcelona will try to get better in midfield this summer, with Real Betis’ Guido Rodriguez looking set to arrive on a free, but it appears they are also looking for a more prestigious summer that can settle the debate over their deepest-lying midfielder. One of the candidates that has been most heavily linked with the Blaugrana is Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich.

The 29-year-old is in talks with Bayern over a new deal, and if they cannot reach one, then the Bavarian giants will be open to selling him. For his part, Kimmich is believed to be keen on a move, and the imminent appointment of Hansi Flick, those rumours have only grown.

According to Sport however, Kimmich has turned down an offer from Barcelona, with the money the sticking point. The Catalan daily say that Kimmich earns around €19.5m per annum before tax, and that’s a figure Barcelona are unlikely to match this summer due to their financial constraints. The Blaugrana will also have to return to the 1:1 ratio of spending, by moving within their salary limit again.

Barcelona have been looking to fill the gap left by Sergio Busquets all season, and Kimmich looks to be one of the prime targets to take on that role, although it is also true that he has rarely anchored a midfield on his own. If the Blaugrana are forced to compete on a financial level though, then Bayern will like their chances of keeping him.
