The midfielder could not be happier at the club and in the city. He feels valued by Hansi Flick and is all set to extend his stay with the Catalan giants.
De Jong’s current contract runs until 2026, and the new agreement would extend his stay until 2029, provided there are no last-minute changes. If the deal is completed in full, De Jong would spend an entire decade wearing the Blaugrana shirt.
With his contractual situation sorted, the Dutchman is now focused solely on his performances on the pitch.
Aged 28, he knows that he has a golden opportunity ahead of him with the talented generation of players surrounding him.
De Jong aims to help the club achieve more successful seasons, with tomorrow’s Gamper Trophy match serving as a moment to heal the rift between himself and the fans that emerged during the previous campaign.
It has been almost a year since 12 August 2024, a day that marked a turning point for De Jong and his relationship with Barcelona’s supporters.

That day, Barça faced AS Monaco in the Joan Gamper Trophy and it proved to be one to forget for De Jong as he was met with a resounding chorus of boos from a section of the Barça fans when his name was announced during the traditional presentation of the squad.
At that time, De Jong was experiencing his lowest point with the Barcelona fanbase, while being linked with an exit. Some supporters held his occasional poor performances against him, particularly given his status as one of the highest-paid players in the squad.
Fast forward a year, and De Jong is now preparing for another Gamper Trophy. However, this time, his situation is vastly different.
The Dutch midfielder is now regarded as a crucial player under Flick, who has entrusted him with a starting role as soon as he was back to full fitness.
Since then, De Jong has become irreplaceable, forming a world-class midfield partnership with Pedri. The latter stages of the season were particularly significant for the Dutchman, who delivered several standout performances.
The fans’ perception of De Jong has changed dramatically over the past year. His status at the club seems to have shifted, and although he may still have critics, the majority of the fanbase now appears to be firmly in his corner.
