Barcelona midfield star airs two complains against the referees after the match against Sevilla

After missing the Copa del Rey quarter-final against Valencia on Thursday, the Barcelona midfielder returned to the pitch after getting the medical green light following his head collision with an opposition player in last week’s game against Alaves.

The Spanish midfielder slotted right back into Hansi Flick’s starting lineup, but his time on the pitch was limited to only 45 minutes, as Flick replaced him with Fermin Lopez at half-time.

His replacement, Lopez, remained one of the biggest talking points from this game as he scored a goal before being expelled with a red card for a harsh tackle on Djibril Sow.

The Blaugranes did not complain a lot about this expulsion, even though they could have argued that the red card shown to their player was rather harsh. However, one player who expressed his disagreement with the referee’s decision after the match was Gavi.

As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the midfielder spoke to the media, and highlighted how the referee played a role in Hansi Flick’s decision to sub him out at half-time:

“The coach told me that I had a yellow card and that it wasn’t the right moment to do anything reckless. Everyone knows that referees don’t hold back with me.”

The Barcelona midfielder also recalled how a Real Madrid midfielder, Dani Ceballos, did not get a similar penalty for his similar action in the game against Atletico Madrid:

“Yesterday in the Madrid vs. Atlético de Madrid match, it was quite clear and similar—not the same, but similar (referring to Ceballos’ tackle). They gave him [Fermin] a red card, but they could have easily given him a yellow instead.”

Thus, the La Masia graduate, who is not generally known to keep himself restricted either on the pitch or in front of the microphones, complained twice about the referee. Luckily, the red card did not cost Barcelona much last night, but hopefully, the controversy surrounding the officials in Spain will die down soon.
